Re: EC's Viviane Reding Needs a Clue

Bret,
Your concerns - and Patrick`s - worth a deeper thought.
For sure, saying that "... it will be the sole right of the US government to decide whether this Top Level Domain enters cyberspace or not..." shows a complete misundertanding of how things work in ICANN. This is the typical oversimplificating argument that I heard in Geneva some weeks ago.
Obviously, Mrs. Reding is confused or poorly advised. I don´t think she`s trying to drive the process into a China-Brazil-Iran governments oversight (nobody is that dumb). She just got it all wrong.
The work for those of us (not US, but us) who are involved in the ICANN communitty should be to show the world how the process works and why it is going well. We are suffering for our lack of capabilities to outreach and foster educational and capacity building programs and efforts.
The world don`t know about ICANN, and it is completely understadable for some governments officials to get confused.
In our efforts, we should be very careful about the alternatives adn possible outcome of WSIS, since most of the times sometimes, uninformed desicions lead to disaster.
Best,
Sebas Ricciardi
