We've been running a little experiment around the firm the last six months, trying out various PDAs to see which ones worked best with the firm's IT systems. I put the Zaurus through the paces, while others tried out Blackberries and Treos and Palms and Windows handhelds. After much experimenting and debating, the one we're going to adopt firm-wide is the Blackberry, principally because it syncs well with Notes. This will show up on my desk next week.
What I learned during the few months that I've been using the Zaurus though is that a PDA isn't really a tool I need. I'm a laptop guy. I have a PC at work; a PC, two Macs and a Linux Server at home; and a TiBook and Thinkpad for everywhere in between. The PDA is perfect for everywhere I might travel without my laptop, but those are places I wouldn't want to be reached anyway. A PDA that could replace my laptop, or vice-versa, is the tool I want.

There was a point where I wanted to replace my laptop with a PDA. I actually found one that I thought would do it, the Toshiba e740. This little thing had a 400mhz Xscale processor, amazing graphics, built-in WiFi, SD and CF memory slots - in other words, every single feature known to man.
I bought one and added a wireless folding keyboard, a 1gb microdrive, a VGA adapter and a 14 hour high-capacity battery.
And then I took it to Amsterdam for an ICANN meeting.
And then I brought it home and stopped using it. Less than three months into owning it, this $1200 computing miracle became a $1200 doorstop. I found that the laptop, despite its larger size and weight, was preferable to the PDA.
I've since sold the Toshiba and replaced it with a Treo 900 that I found used for just under $150. It works great (outstanding RMA notwithstanding), and it still finds its way into my shirt pocket every single day.
Have fun with the Blackberry, they *are* great devices, but a little pricey if you have to spring for your own data subscription.

Fortunately, the firm is picking up the backend server software to sync with Lotus Notes *and* the monthly subscription fee. It's a nice enterprise solution, but it's not a tool I'd use for my personal stuff.
